In 2017, Hugh and his wife, Holly, spearheaded Historic Church and the Historic movement. As the Lead Pastor & Community Organizer for Historic, Hugh is responsible for vision clarity, strategic innovation, communications, and leadership development. Driven to be community-first, Hugh guides Historic Church to be focused on doing its part in breaking harmful cycles of poverty, violence and inequality while restoring helpful realities of justice, hope and human flourishing.
In conjunction with being a part of the leadership team for Historic, Hugh is also the CEO for Dallas-based non-profit, ACHIEVE, focused on ending exclusion of people with disabilities.
Prior to founding Historic, Breland earned his bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, where he was also recognized as a Baylor Basketball Letterman, then pursued further education at Southwestern Theological Seminary. He has served as an ordained minister for over 20 years, been an educator in Title 1 secondary schools, served in various church staff roles including Students, Creative Arts and Communications. He serves on the Board of Directors for Space_&_Equity, mentors at Cornerstone Crossroads Academy, co-hosts The Chocolate and Vanilla Podcast and has been featured on various platforms for his meaningful work for the marginalized and excluded within our society.
Outside of work, Hugh enjoys adventures with his wife Holly, chasing their toddler Halle-James, and wrestling their 180-pound English Mastiff, Halston.
